Post San Diego Woodturners Mini-Symposium ReportMonday, July 19th, 2010The San Diego Woodturners 10th Annual Mini-Symposium was held on July 17th. This was our first year at th event and unfortunatly turnout was very low. During the first demonstration the crowd numbered only 65, and that included counting the vendors! Forgotten Woods represented itself well with a wide selection of fine turning woods. The crowd was very friendly and we handed out alot of brochures and business cards. We are looking forward to welcoming many of those same friendly faces to our wood shop location in Atascadero, CA. as well as processing on-line orders from all the club members who were not able to attend this years mini-symposium. With over 8000 square foot of warehouse and lathe shop area, we have plenty more to offer for every woodturning level and age. A few San Diego Woodturner members have visited us already, we thank you! Take a look at some of what you’ll find at Forgotten Woods.

Easter Day California StyleSunday, April 4th, 2010Panguana - New Wood From PeruThursday, March 25th, 2010We milled a new species of wood today. Panguana is the Peruvian name for it. Brosimum utile is the Latin name. After cutting the first cant it became obvious why the local people call it Panguana, the wood colors and grain look just like the feathers on the Panguana bird. The bird is a small quail like grouse, very beautiful and very fast. Panguana, the wood is not at all common and rarely cut commercially. The trees grow between 0 and 1500 foot elevation. It grows up to about 120 feet tall and can have 40″ diameter trunk and 60′ long. The tree yields nice wide and stable boards with little shrinkage. Panguana seems to have a nice tonal quality and may turn out to be a good Luthiers wood. That makes sense because it is in the same genera as Manchinga. |
